Classic French Toast with Country Bread | Breakfast recipe

French Toast , a classic breakfast made with bread slices and few basic pantry ingredients. Thick slice of bread soaked in egg custard mixture, toasted in butter and served with maple syrup. Perfect breakfast for weekend or on any special occasion. It has crispy toasted bread on outside and soft & melt in mouth texture inside. Perfectly cooked french toast is pure deliciousness and absolutely bliss !!!

After years of trying french toast with various sandwich bread available in the market and fed up with those soggy french toast, finally realized that french toast is all about bread, so you need correct bread for perfect french toast. Challah bread and country style bread are perfect for french toast. Challah bread are basically egg bread and i prefer eggless bread for my toast therefore my choice of bread for french toast is country bread. It's thick and hold it's shape while making french toast and at the same time it's crispy on out side and soft inside.

Next the custard!! It is basically the milk & egg mixture. Use good quality egg and whole milk for great flavor and taste. Some people prefer to use half and half or even couple of tsp of cream for richness. But i find that whole milk is just enough to make perfect french toast for my liking without any over powering. Definitely low fat milks are not for this recipe.

Finally for simple custard without any dominant eggy flavor, use 1 egg for every 1/2 cup of milk. Before adding any other ingredients in the egg, add your flavoring agent like vanilla extract /cinnamon in the egg and whisk it first well and then add milk and other ingredients for making custard. It helps to avoid that eggy flavor in your toast.

Now let's check out how to make classic french toast.

Vegan French Toast | Eggless French Toast | Bread Toast

Vegan French Toast !! Yes, you have read it correct. A french toast recipe without egg and milk and it's absolutely delicious with wonderful flavor.

While browsing through foodgawker, i came across this wonderful idea of making vegan french toast. In this recipe, instead of regular dairy milk, coconut milk is used. As i love anything with coconut flavor, i had tried it on the very next day and as expected, it turned out very delicious and soft.

In the last one month, i have made this toast for 3 times so far. Every time, i made a few changes to suit our taste better. In the original recipe, almond milk and coconut milk was used in equal proportion, but we liked the toast more with only coconut milk.

And also i reduced the amount of corn flour as suggested since i used home made thick coconut milk and i don't need more corn flour to thicken the batter. All i'm saying is get the idea, play with your ingredients and adjust as per your taste. Now let's move on to the recipe.

Notes:
  • A day old bread is idle for this toast, so that it doesn't absorb coconut milk more and make it as soggy.
  • If you're making with fresh bread, then instead of dip it in the coconut milk, spoon the coconut milk evenly on the both sides of the bread and toast. That way, you get soft but not soggy toast.
  • Adding coconut flakes on top is optional. As i like coconut flavor a lot, i have used it.
  • Instead of cinnamon, you can use vanilla extract also.
  • I have used homemade coconut milk.
  • Depends on the sweetness of the coconut milk, adjust the amount of honey.
