Broken Wheat Upma | Gothumai Rava Upma | Breakfast Recipe

Gothumai Rava Upma, a healthy and delicious breakfast/dinner recipe made from broken wheat. It's one of the easiest tiffin recipes that you can make in a pressure cooker on busy mornings. Unlike regular rava/semolina, broken wheat takes little longer time to cook, so i have used my pressure cooker to quick the process. But you can make this upma in the open pot also.

Depending on the brand, size of the broken wheat & how fluffy or mushy you want, the water quantity may vary. The broken wheat that i got here has bigger granules than the one that i used to make in India. So it takes a couple of tries to figure out how much water it needs to cook to my liking. It needs exactly 2.5 cups of water for 1 cup of broken wheat to cook it perfectly without being mushy.

In today's recipe, i have used carrots alone in the upma. But you can add beans, peas also along with carrots or even you can make without any veggies, still it tastes great. Personally i like this broken wheat upma more than the regular rava upma because of its texture and the mild chewiness in the broken wheat. Now let's check out how to make this delicious upma in a pressure cooker quickly.

Semiya Upma with Vegetables | Vegetables Vermicelli Upma

Semiya Upma with Vegetables, a quick & easy to make breakfast/tiffin with vermicelli and vegetables. Few weeks before, when i had shared this simple vermicelli upma in Instagram, many have requested the recipe, that's when i realized that this recipe is still not in the blog.

It happens all the time, some how i always skip the simple recipe to post here, to be honest, it not even crossed my mind to post such a simple recipes. Guess, it's time to change that habit :-) Like i have already said, it's one of the easiest recipe to make in a jiffy.

Back in Amma's place, she often make this as evening tiffin alone with coffee/tea for a long day or when we feel little hungry in the evening.  It tastes awesome with sip of tea/coffee. Do give it a try if you haven't already.
Yesterday the temperature here was above 5c after almost 3 months and it was such a pleasant day  to be outside(with all those winter jackets of course  :-)). It's really amazing how our body adapts to the environment.
Back in days, when i was newly married, even the Tiruppur cold in December made me sick and had cold & fever for a few days. That reminds me of the quote " No such things as bad weather only bad clothing" . Realized how true is that here in this winter !!! Ok, now let's check out the semiya upma recipe.

Oats Upma | Breakfast recipe | Oats Recipe

Oats Upma, a healthy and quick to make breakfast with oats and Indian spices.  Few years back oats was getting popular in India like anything and almost all the Indian dishes have an oats version like oats upma, oats dosa , oats khichdi and the list goes on.

As of now, the whole world had already tried everything possible with oats and moves on to the other grains. But here i'm sharing my first oats recipe now since i'm so reluctant to try instantly when something new comes into market, as usual i have taken my own phase of time to get to know about that and slowly started to use in my cooking.

Now for last one year i have been cooking oats regularly at home and now i'm quite confident about how to handle the oats and out of all my experiments with oats, this upma is my most favorite breakfast recipe with oats. It's really very simple and delicious with mild flavors and comes handy on your busy mornings. Now let's check out the recipe.

Make sure that the oats is completely wet, keep the flame in low and close the pan with lid and cook it for 5 mins. Stir it between to avoid sticking at the bottom.

Notes:
  • Depends on the moisture in the onions and oats quality, you may need more or less of 1 tbsp of water as i mentioned here.
  • Don't pour all the water at once. Slowly add the water and gently mix the oats. It helps to make sure that every grain of  oats is completely wet.
  • Add the spices more or less as per your liking.
  • Upma tastes good as it is, but if you like, you can serve them with chutney or sambar.

Rava Upma | Semolina Upma | Breakfast Recipe

Rava Upma, a simple & tasty breakfast/dinner dish that can be prepared in a jiffy for busy days. There were times that i hate upma like anything and don't even want to touch even when i was ravenously hungry. All those things were changed when i started cooking and i guess that i really started to appreciate the simple dishes when i cook on my own. That's when i realized even with simple ingredients, some dishes (like upma, kanji ) are extremely delicious compared to all the restaurant style fancy dishes where the ingredients list itself go for a page.
Now coming to today's recipe, as simple as this recipe sounds, they are high chances that this upma can easily turned to glue(personal experience) like texture!!! Roasting the rava  & the water quantity is very important to get the non sticky upma and also while adding the rava, stir it continuously to avoid lumps. If these things are taken care of , then your upma would be delicious. This is the basic recipe, if you want to add more veggies, go for it and make it as you per your liking.

Heat the pan with oil, add the mustard & urad dal, let the mustard splutter.Add the onions, curry leaves, ginger & green chili, saute till the onions becomes translucent, then add the water into the pan.Add salt and let it bring into boil, then add the roasted rava slowly & stir simultaneously. Once all the water is absorbed, add the grated coconut , mix it well and cover it with lid and keep the flame in low for 2 more mins & switch off the flame. Finally add few coriander leaves on top and it's ready to serve.
Notes:
  • Coconut oil gives great flavor to the upma, so highly recommend to use it.
  • Using non stick helps to avoid sticking at the bottom.
  • While adding the rava into boiling water, keep stir continuously to avoid lumps.
  • Some time, i have added 1 tsp of chana dal while tempering for extra crunchiness.
  • For extra richness, add a tsp of ghee on top while serving.
  • I personally like the ginger flavor in the upma, but that's pure optional

Idli Upma | Idli Upma with leftover idli | Breakfast recipe

Idli Upma, a quick fix for breakfast with the leftover idli under 10 mins. ST is a big fan of idli upma, for his sake, i make them often for our morning breakfast. Usually there won't be any leftover idlies in our home, so if i had planned to make this upma then i made extra batch of idlies and kept it aside.

Fresh idlies are not easy to crumble, so if i had planned to make for breakfast, then previous night itself,  i made the idlies and kept it refrigerator. That way,it's very easy to crumble the idlies and there won't be any big lumps in the upma.
Now a days, i hardly seen people making this upma at home, in my school days and all, if there was any function in the family, then definitely the next morning breakfast would be this idli upma from the previous day left over idlies.

Though i didn't like this upma back then, the memory associated with it is so refreshing and nostalgic!!!. And the next thing comes to mind is the "idli upma" scene from the movie "Surya Vamsam". Ok, enough with the stories, will check the recipe now!!!
